Have Yourself A Very Meezer Christmas

It’s that time of year again! Hanging up the mistletoe, trimming the tree, gathering with friends and family, indulging in special treats…. But as much as meezers love getting into things, sometimes it can be a bit too much.

Here are some cat Christmas signs of stress to keep an eye out for:

• Hiding
• Singing louder and longer (even for a Siamese!)
• Peeing outside the box
• Increased grooming
• Easily irritated

Here are some more things to watch out for…

And of course there is a lot more opportunity for the curious cat to eat something she shouldn’t. So here are some simple and safe re-directions so your meezers can join in the festivities!

1. Make sure there is a safe quiet area and leave it unchanged with familiar blankets, furniture, maybe even some unwashed clothing. This way there is somewhere to retreat and regroup.
2. Keep daily routines as normal as possible, especially the feeding schedule.
3. Make sure decorations are not toxic or dangerous to cats, such as mistletoe, holly, and lilies, which should be placed out of reach.
4. Offer alternative toys for them to play with and sprinkle with catnip to keep them from leaping into the Christmas tree. (Or at least to keep them from leaping into it as much!)
5. Have a few loosely wrapped cat presents so your cat is happily distracted. A new puzzle/activity toy is a great idea.
6. Same with treats! Safe human foods for cats to eat are cooked boneless meats and veggies: chicken, lamb, beef, tuna, carrots, broccoli, and pumpkin. PLAIN. Also cooked eggs. And they go crazy for spinach and melon!

I know it seems unlikely that cats would even be interested, but you know our meezers – they get into everything!
